William Mitchell State Park
- Open Year Round
William Mitchell State Park is a popular camping, fishing and boating destination. The 334-acre park is situated between Lake Mitchell and Lake Cadillac and provides an excellent opportunity to view a variety of wildlife on the outskirts of Cadillac. The park was officially dedicated in 1919. A historic canal connects the two lakes and runs directly through the park. Be sure to visit the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center, located within Mitchell State Park.
Guests can make reservations for the campground online. It is a 221-site park. The park has boat launches for both Lake Mitchell and Lake Cadillac with 25 vehicle and trailer spaces. New this year, an ADA accessible kayak and canoe launch was put in on Lake Cadillac. Both lakes also feature day use beaches and Lake Mitchell has a pavilion that guests can reserve for large parties.
The Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center is fully supported and managed by the Parks and Recreation Division and is within the boundary of Mitchell State Park. The building, utilities and any other expenses are paid for by the Mitchell State Park.
A recreation passport is needed for all vehicles that enter a State Park, Recreation Area, State Forest Campground, Non-Motorized Trail Trailhead and some standalone Boating Access Sites that don’t fall within a State Park, Recreation Area, State Forest Campground, etc. This has been in effect since 1961. From 1961 to October 2010 there was a Motor Vehicle Permit and then in October 2010 it switched to the Recreation Passport for a better stable source of funding.
Recreation Passports can be purchased by both residents of Michigan and non-residents of Michigan at Mitchell State Park or employees of the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center. Non-residents can purchase a daily passport (good for that day at all the areas listed above) or an annual passport that will allow for access to all of the above listed locations for the calendar year that the passport was purchased.
